About this place
When the platter arrives bearing generous fried prawns, it is hard not to smile. The fried prawn lunch, celebrated as Akaoni's signature set, features a satisfying presentation topped with 3 prawns. Fried in a light, delicate crust that never turns greasy, each plump, springy prawn pairs comfortably with tartar sauce. Beginning with a cup of soup before tucking into the main alongside freshly steamed rice, this Japanese-Western set meal delivers straightforward, comforting fullness.
Another essential fixture is the limited-quantity Antarctic Beef Stew. Recreated by the head chef, a veteran of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition wintering party, the dish uses the same ingredients once served to crew members stationed at Showa Station. Domestic beef simmers for roughly 4 and a half hours, producing a deep, richly flavored sauce that complements the meat's savory profile. The rest of the yoshoku lineup reflects similar patience, including thick fried whitefish fillets and a hamburg steak in house demi-glace sauce that is grilled to order for over 20 minutes.
Set along a quiet residential street in Goryo Oeyamacho, Nishikyo Ward, the dining room frames seasonal greenery and garden trees through large windows. With offerings spanning the daily Akaoni lunch to curries, pastas, and after-meal coffee, the restaurant accommodates casual solo lunches and family meals alike. Ample free parking also makes it an easy choice on days when you want to take your time over a meal while enjoying the view outside.
